gumsA dental veneer refers to a thin layer of ceramic or porcelain material that completely covers a tooth. Veneers are a great choice if you want to close up spaces between your teeth, repair a broken tooth, make crooked teeth appear straight or stained teeth look whiter.

The process involved in getting a dental veneer is relatively simple and quick. First, your dentist will remove approximately 0.3 to 1.2 millimeters of enamel from the tooth’s surface. He’ll then create an impression of the tooth. Dental lab technicians will then make a veneer for the tooth based on the impression, and your dentist will apply the veneer using an adhesive and a light beam to quicken the hardening process.

There are several advantages of dental veneers:

Good News Regarding Dental Implants

gumsTechnological advances in dentistry are adding up to better oral health for countless people throughout the U.S. and around the world. One of the most popular dental procedures for replacing missing or damaged teeth is the dental implant. Considering the advantages, it’s easy to see why more and more people are choosing dental implants:

• Implants look natural and feel like your regular teeth.
• Implants are durable, often lasting for the entire lifetime of the patient.
• Implants don’t compromise the integrity of other teeth in the same way as a dental bridge, for example, which is anchored to the patient’s other teeth.
• Implants make it easier to speak clearly and chew food. Poor-fitting dentures – and even dentures that fill well – can slip, making it difficult to speak clearly. Dentures can also make chewing food difficult.

Although dental implants are a great choice for several reasons, there were many people who were unable to get dental implants because of poor bone health. Differences between HMO and PPO Dental Insurance

gumsThere’s no doubt about it – it’s extremely important to purchase dental insurance for you and your family. Just as you need medical insurance to help cover the costs of routine checkups and catastrophic illness, you need dental insurance to help pay for your exams, cleanings and any other dental procedures that you and your family may need now or in the future. Remember that healthy teeth and gums are related to good overall health, so it’s vital to maintain good oral health for you and your family. When shopping for the right dental plan, make sure know the differences between the two major types of dental insurance: HMO and PPO.
PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations)
Generally speaking, a PPO plan gives the insured person more flexibility with regard to choosing a dentist. Usually, the insurance company provides a list of “preferred providers.” The insured person has the choice of either using a dentist on the preferred provider list or using one that is not included on the list. PPOs are typically a bit more expensive than HMO plans because they offer this flexibility.

HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations)
If you belong to an HMO, you must choose a dentist that has been preapproved by your insurance company and appears on the company’s preferred provider list. In most HMO plans, services provided by a dentist who is not a preferred provider will not be covered by the insurance company. HMO plans are typically somewhat less expensive than PPOs because they’re more restrictive with regard to your choice of dentists.

What Causes Bleeding Gums?

If you suffer from swollen, tender or bleeding gums, the cause could be as simple as poor oral hygiene.

However, it’s important not to ignore this problem.

While the cause may be quite simple, it could also be an indication of other more serious problems.

Here are a few possible reasons for bleeding gums:

• Lack of oral hygiene – If you don’t brush and floss your teeth on a regular basis, you may start to collect bacteria inside your mouth. Left untreated, the bacteria can lead to infection, and an infection in your mouth can lead to other more serious infections elsewhere in your body.

• Poor diet – If you overindulge in foods that are starchy or filled with sugar, you’ll be more likely to develop problems with your teeth and gums. If your diet is lacking in vitamins, that can also negatively impact your oral health.

• Diabetes – If you suffer from diabetes, you are more prone to developing problems with your teeth and gums. The cause is usually chronic high blood pressure and lack of proper oral hygiene.

• Pregnancy – When a woman is pregnant, it’s common for her body to look for additional sources of calcium, which are often found in the teeth. For that reason, it’s typical for pregnant women to experience more problems with their teeth and gums.

• Medicines – Some medication, particularly blood thinners, can result in bleeding gums.

If you’re experiencing bleeding gums, it’s important to tell your dentist about the problem. He or she can examine your mouth and have a discussion with you in an effort to determine the root cause of the problem.

Different Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants are tooth replacements that are mounted on metal posts and surgically implanted into the jawbone. While dentures and bridges can be loose and ill-fitting, dental implants are much more stable, feel better, look better and will last a lifetime. Whether or not you’re a candidate for dental implants depends on whether or not your gums are healthy and how much bone you have available to anchor the implant.
There are two different types of dental implants.

• Endosteal dental implant: This involves surgically inserting an implant into the patient’s jawbone over the course of three procedures. The first involves inserting the implant into the jawbone. The second involves connecting a post to the implant after the gum tissue has healed around it. The third and final procedure involves attaching an artificial tooth (or teeth) to the post. This is the most common form of dental implant.

• Subperiosteal dental implant: This type of procedure involves fitting a metal frame onto the jawbone. As the gum around the plate heals, the frame becomes permanently affixed to the bone. Posts are then attached to the frame, and artificial teeth are then attached to the posts.
While there’s no doubt that dental implants are, in many ways, much more desirable than either dentures or bridges, implants can also be much more expensive. How to Know if You Need a Root Canal

Toothache A root canal is a procedure done in an effort to save an infected tooth or one that is severely decayed. When the pulp and nerve tissue inside a tooth is damaged, bacteria begin to form inside the pulp chamber.

Bacteria can lead to decay, and decay can cause infection and result in an abscessed tooth. The gum tissue around the tooth may become infected as well.

During a root canal procedure, your dentist removes nerve and pulp from inside the tooth, then seals and cleans it. Once this is done, you can return to your normal eating habits. Your tooth will be completely functional.

Root Canal Symptoms

Although it’s entirely possible that you’ll experience no symptoms whatsoever and will still need a root canal, you may experience any or all of the following symptoms if you have a tooth that requires the procedure:

  • • You may experience a severe toothache, especially when you apply pressure on the tooth or use it to chew food

  • • The affected tooth may become discolored

  • • You may experience swelling in the gum tissue surrounding the tooth

  • • The surrounding gum tissue may be painful or tender

  • • You may notice extreme and prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks

  • • There may be a recurring pimple that appears on the gum tissue close to the affected tooth

A root canal procedure is an effective way to save a badly decayed tooth, which doesn’t need the nerve or pulp tissue to function. Usually, the procedure can be done in one or two office visits. Talk to your dentist for more information.

Purposes of a Dental Crown

Crowns can be used in a variety of different circumstances:

  • To restore a damaged tooth to a like-new condition
  • To protect what little remains of an original tooth that has an exceptionally large filling
  • To improve the appearance of a tooth that is discolored or shaped poorly
  • To protect a weakened tooth

Why Porcelain Crowns are Popular Choices

There are two types of porcelain crowns available: porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and all-porcelain crowns. Both types are popular because they can be made to closely match the color and overall appearance of other natural teeth, and they don’t present a problem for people with allergies to metal.

A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is quite durable, but over time the underlying metal may begin to show around the base of the crown. This makes a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown a good choice for teeth in the back of the mouth.

All-porcelain crowns, on the other hand, can be made to more closely match the natural appearance and color of other teeth, although they’re not as durable as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. This makes an all-porcelain crown an excellent choice for teeth that are visible in the front of the mouth.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Periodontal Disease

keep your teeth clean 2013 Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a problem that is all too common in the U.S. In fact, a recent study by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) concluded that half of all adults aged 30 and over in the U.S. suffer from gum disease.

If you’re one of those people, and if your disease has progressed to a certain point, surgery may be required in order to repair the damage to your gums. Fortunately, surgery isn’t always necessary.

If you’re in the early stages of periodontal disease, your dentist may recommend non-surgical methods to stop the progression of the disease and return your gums to a healthy condition.

Non-Surgical Options

  • Regular dental cleanings:Your dentist may recommend a schedule of regular dental cleanings if you’re in the early stages of gum disease. These regular cleanings will remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. Most dentists recommend that people without gum disease have their teeth cleaned twice a year. But if you suffer from the early stages of periodontal disease, your dentist will probably recommend that you have your teeth cleaned more often.
  • Scaling and root planing:More advanced stages of gum disease may require scaling and root planing. This procedure, done under a local anesthetic, removes plaque and tartar both above and below the gum line. Rough spots on teeth are smoothed (or planed) during the process. This procedure is usually recommended for people with tartar buildup under the gums.

Mercury-Free Dental Fillings

If you have tooth decay or a tooth that is cracked or broken as a result of injury or grinding your teeth, chances are your dentist will recommend getting a dental filling to repair the tooth. Dental fillings are still quite common, and the procedure hasn’t changed all that much over the years:

  1. The first step your dentist will perform is to remove the tooth decay (if present), and clean the area to prepare it.
